Today, in a press conference phone call, Equality Virginia’s Political Action Committee announced its endorsement of Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam in the race for Governor of Virginia. EV PAC endorses Northam for his shared vision for a Virginia that is free of discrimination. Year after year, Northam has shown a steadfast commitment to Virginia’s gay and transgender community; from his election to the state Senate in 2007, where he earned a perfect legislative record on key LGBT issues, to his 2015 tie-breaking vote as Lt. Gov. to pass employment protections that included sexual orientation and gender identity.

“We look forward to working with Ralph Northam as Governor to further the current administration’s progress and keep the Commonwealth moving forward for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. EV PAC is excited to make Ralph our first endorsement of 2017 and urges Virginians to stand with him, just as he has stood up for equality for gay and transgender people,” said James Parrish, executive director of Equality Virginia Advocates.

“Equality is a Virginia value,” said the Lt. Gov. “That’s why I’ve been a committed partner to Equality Virginia’s mission of making sure that every Virginian, no matter who you are, no matter who you love, feels welcome, safe, and free from discrimination in this commonwealth. It’s an honor to receive the continued support of Equality Virginia Advocates and as governor, and they’ll have no stronger ally in Richmond than me.”

Equality Virginia’s Political Action Committee also announces its endorsement of Danica Roem for House Distritct-13, the seat currently held by Del. Bob Marshall.  Not only is Danica the first openly transgender candidate to run in Virginia, but she also represents a viable option for HD-13 with a vision that is not only inclusive of LGBT individuals but all the district’s diverse residents. We believe electing this impressive candidate to the House of Delegates will offer a stark contrast to the divisive nature of Del. Marshall’s time in office.

“I’m honored to be endorsed by EV PAC, an organization that has led the way for protecting and promoting the civil rights of LGBTQ Virginians by helping elect pro-equality candidate,” Roem said in a statement. “I know that if I win this race, we can replace the most anti-LGBTQ legislator in the South with someone who would be the only out transgender state legislator in the country.”

Further endorsements from EV PAC will be made in the coming weeks.
